File-sharing scam targets Twitter |
|
Twitter has identified a scheme that uses compromised file-sharing sites to steal the log on information of users. The service said it had discovered a number of compromised "torrent" sites that had been set up specifically to skim usernames and passwords.
Torrent sites acts as indexes of links to TV, film and music files. Scammers were then able to use the data to gain access to Twitter and other sites because many people use the same logon for multiple services.

Software: JSON data interchange format gets standards blessing |
|
This inclusion "will certainly have a big impact on developers," said Douglas Crockford, the Yahoo software architect cited as the creator of JSON. "JSON is already pretty widely-used in Web applications. By having JSON built into the ECMAScript language, [JSON] implementations will get faster and safer," Crockford said. The approval is also a sign that the Web application development community is edging away from using XML as the sole desired standard for exchanging data among disparate systems, in at least those cases where delivery of relatively simple structured data is required.
The new standard, officially entitled ECMA-262, includes an object for both creating and parsing JSON texts. For the most part, it follows the 2006 Internet Engineering Task Force RFC 4627 authored by Crockford. The new ECMAScript standard attempts to rectify a number of security issues surrounding JSON. Over the past several years, a growing number of Web application developers used JSON instead of XML-based approaches, like the Simple Object Access Protocol, to mark up data so it can be transferred between two computers. This created two sometimes-opposing camps within the Web application development community.

Ciekawostki: Ancient Mediterranean flood mystery solved... |
|
Research has revealed details of the catastrophic Zanclean flood that refilled the Mediterranean Sea more than five million years ago. The flood occurred when Atlantic waters found their way into the cut-off and desiccated Mediterranean basin. The researchers say that a 200km channel across the Gibraltar strait was carved out by the floodwaters. Their findings, published in Nature, show that the resulting flood could have filled the basin within two years.
The team was led by Daniel Garcia-Castellanos from the Research Council of Spain (CSIC). He explained that he and his colleagues laid the foundations for this study by working on tectonic lakes. This... may have involved peak rates of sea level rise in the Mediterranean of more than 10m per day Daniel Garcia-Castellanos
Research Council of Spain They developed a model of how the mountain lakes quickly "cease to exist" when erosion produces "outlet rivers" that drain them.
This same principle, Dr Garcia-Castellanos said, could be used to explain the Zanclean flood that reconnected the Mediterranean with the rest of the World's oceans. "We could for the first time link the amount of water crossing the channel with the amount of erosion causing it to grow over time," he told.

Opinie: Richard Branson unveils Virgin Galactic space shuttle..! |
|
Sir Richard Branson has unveiled the rocket plane he will use to take fare-paying passengers into space. SpaceShipTwo was presented to the world in Mojave, California. The vehicle will undergo testing over the next 18 months before being allowed to take ticketed individuals on short-hop trips just above the atmosphere.
Billionaire Sir Richard, who heads the Virgin Group, intends to run the first flights out of New Mexico before extending operations around the globe. Built from lightweight carbon composite materials and powered by a hybrid rocket motor, SS2 is based on the X-Prize-winning SpaceShipOne concept - a rocket plane that is lifted initially by a carrier vehicle before blasting skywards.
It's incredible to think only 450 people have ever been into space Sir Richard Branson Speaking at the official unveiling event, Sir Richard said he had been dreaming of going into space since watching the moon landings. "I know there are literally thousands of people who would love to go to space, to be able to look out the window, to marvel at the beautiful Earth," the AFP news agency quoted him as saying. "Through Virgin Galactic we will make it possible."

Software: Grid computing tunes tiny transistors for future chips |
|
A vast network of computers is being harnessed to design components for the next generation of silicon chips. Simulations of transistors smaller than 30 nanometres (billionths of a metre) are being run on the UK e-science grid, which links thousands of computers.
The results will help designers cope with the physical constraints that occur when working at such tiny scales. About 20 years worth of processing time has been used by simulating hundreds of thousands of tiny transistors.
The researchers hope to get a sense of how such tiny components vary to work out the best way to produce future generations of chips with even smaller components. "What we do in these simulations is try to predict the behaviour of these devices in the presence of atomic scale effects," said Professor Asen Asenov, head of the device modelling group at the University of Glasgow, which is leading the NanoCMOS simulation project.
The increasing power of silicon chips is largely dictated by the size of the components that chip makers can cram on to each chunk of silicon. The basic building block of a chip is the transistor, tiny switches that can either be "on" or "off".

Informacje: Untouched Bhopal offers tourism potential..! |
|
Sunset at the Bhimbetka rock shelters on the outskirts of Bhopal offers a glimpse into how people used to live in central India 100,000 years ago.
The earliest traces of human life in India have been discovered here. Inside natural caves there are impressive rock paintings, some of them thousands of years old, depicting hunters or warriors mounted on elephants. Bhimbetka rock painting The Bhimbetka rock paintings are thousands of years old.
The caves, which have been designated a Unesco World Heritage Site, lie on a hilltop surrounded by the sort of jungle that Rudyard Kipling wrote about in his books.
Yet there are only about a dozen or so visiting tourists here, none of them foreign.

Henry faces FIFA rap over handball...! |
|
Thierry Henry could face FIFA disciplinary action over his handball which helped France to qualify for the finals of the 2010 World Cup at the expense of Ireland.
FIFA president Sepp Blatter told reporters in Cape Town that the Barcelona striker's "blatant unfair play" could land him in hot water.
"The FIFA disciplinary committee will open an investigation ... concerning the behavior of the player Thierry Henry," he said.
"It was blatant unfair play and was seen all around the world. I don't know the outcome of the disciplinary committee, let them make the decision.
"Fair play must be maintained in our game."
Blatter was speaking after an extraordinary meeting of the FIFA executive committee, which was convened to consider the refereeing controversy in the France - Ireland match, incidents surrounding the Algeria - Egypt playoff tie and matchfixing in Europe.
It had been widely trailed that the FIFA executive would sanction the use of two extra officials behind both goal lines in World Cup.

One of Google Chrome OS's hardest tasks? |
|
Many challenges will have to be solved before Google is ready to release Chrome OS, it's browser-based operating system for Netbooks. One of the biggest ones could be something as far offline as it gets.
Google is looking at unique ways of solving the problems posed by the lack of standards among printer drivers.

Driver support has derailed many an operating system release, perhaps most recently causing headaches for Microsoft and Windows Vista. As a result, Google is paying close attention to the thorny problem of making sure Chrome OS will work with the myriad devices consumers can be expected to connect to those Netbooks, said Linus Upson, engineering director for the Chrome browser and Chrome OS.

Smart grid potential gated by broadband... |
|
The Federal Communications Commission on Monday held a "field hearing" at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on the role of communications in energy and environment. It was an information-gathering session designed to help set a national broadband strategy.
Energy displays bring the smart grid home (photos)
The entire notion of the smart grid supposes connectivity at different points along the grid. Adding digital technologies to the existing system will allow energy to be used more efficiently, increase reliability, and let grid operators use more solar and wind power, say smart-grid advocates.
